November 14, 2017

Mushrooms

Hello again from the Team at Peterborough West Animal Hospital!  We bring the second of six Fall dangers for your pet.  Today we are going to talk about Mushrooms.

There are certain types of mushrooms that can be toxic for our pets, causing:
Amanita phalloides (also known as “death angel”) is a mushroom found throughout North America which can be difficult to identify. The doctors at Peterborough West Animal Hospital want pet parents to avoid all mushrooms and consider them toxic until proven otherwise. Make sure to check your yard for any wild mushrooms, and keep a look out when you take your pets for a walk.  If you suspect your pet has ingested wild mushrooms, it’s crucial to act quickly. Call the staff at Peterborough West Animal Hospital immediately and bring your pet in for Emergency Veterinary Care. Quick action can be life-saving in cases of potential poisoning.
While mushrooms are a significant fall danger, it’s important to be aware of other potential hazards in and around your home throughout the year. For more information on other substances that could be harmful to your pets, check out our article on “Common Household Toxins“.
