And just as in humans, ocular conditions such as cataracts and glaucoma can cause pain, diminish quality of life, and even lead to blindness. At Peterborough West Animal Hospital, we are pleased to offer Tonovet screening, a cutting-edge technology that measures eye pressure to quickly and accurately diagnose underlying conditions of the eye – specifically glaucoma. 

Glaucoma Causes and Risk Factors

Glaucoma is primarily an inherited condition. While relatively rare in cats, it is quite common in dogs, especially certain breeds including beagles, basset hounds, boston terriers, cocker spaniels, shar-peis, chow chows, and shiba inus. Other breeds that are commonly affected include the labrador retriever, toy poodle, and arctic breeds, such as the Siberian husky and samoyed.

In addition to being inherited, glaucoma can also occur as a secondary effect of another disease, such as cancer or advanced cataracts. If a cat is diagnosed with glaucoma, it is almost always the secondary form of the condition.

Signs to Watch For

There are a number of outward signs that could indicate your pet might be suffering from glaucoma or some other ocular condition. Because our pets can’t tell us when they’re having difficulty seeing or experiencing eye pain, it’s up to us to be diligent in knowing what red flags to look for. These may include, but are not limited to:

• Behavioral changes such as withdrawal or disinterest in normal play
• Lethargy or increased sleeping
• Corneas that are visibly cloudy
• Bloodshot eyes
• Swollen or bulging eyes
• Incessant blinking or squinting
• Pupils that are a different size in each eye or that do not respond to light
• Signs of vision loss, such as bumping into furniture or not recognizing familiar people

Diagnosis and Treatment of Glaucoma

Tonovet is a handheld tonometer that is used to scan the eye and take measurements that can then be evaluated by the doctor. The process is non-invasive, completely painless, and does not require the use of any type of anesthesia. 

Tonovet technology can be used to both diagnose existing signs of glaucoma as well as proactively assess risk and establish a baseline for ongoing measurements. When used as a baseline, it can also help to catch other medical conditions early when they can be more easily and effectively treated.
