Social Petworking Month

June 2, 2022

Did you know that June is Social Petworking Month? One of the best things about the rise of the internet, at least in our opinion, is the endless supply of funny animal videos and cute pet pictures we can find online. As it turns out, social media has also had quite an effect on Fido and Fluffy. A local vet offers some insight on this below.

A Good Cause

You don’t need a special occasion to post adorable pet pictures. However, if you wanted one, Social Petworking Day definitely fits the bill. The unofficial holiday was created to help homeless pets get adopted. Want to help? Share posts about local pets that are looking for homes. You may change a pet’s life with a few keystrokes! Even liking photos or posts made by local shelters will help. Although the actual algorithms are still quite mysterious, liking a post usually helps it achieve more visibility, so that more people see it.

Pet Photos

Does your dog or cat have a habit of looking absolutely adorable, only to move as soon as you get your camera? Try downloading a pet photo app. Many of these have presets that work very well at taking animal photos. We also would recommend choosing a background that contrasts with your pet’s fur … unless, of course, you have a black cat and you are going for that ‘kitty void’ look that only shows Fluffy’s eyes.

Offline Petworking

Much networking is done online these days. However, this is a good time to offer some information about interacting with pets in real life. If you come across someone with a cute dog that seems friendly, it’s okay to ask if you can pet it. You should never do this with working dogs or pups that seem uneasy, though.

Pets Online

Quite a few of our furry friends have their own social media pages. There are even some pets that qualify as bona-fido social media celebrities, such as Azuki, the impossibly cute hedgehog. You can also find many social media accounts made by celebrities for their own pets. Some of those ‘influencers’ include the pets of Amanda Seyfried, Paris Hilton, and Matthew Perry. If your furry friend has a social media account, remember to share some social petworking posts this month!

Our Advice on Social Petworking Month in 2024

What is Social Petworking Month, and why is it celebrated?

Social Petworking Month, celebrated in June, is a time dedicated to using social media for the welfare of pets. It promotes sharing posts about adoptable pets, increasing their visibility and chances of finding loving homes. This movement harnesses the power of online communities to create real-world impacts, turning likes and shares into opportunities for needy pets. Participating can play a crucial role in supporting animal adoption and welfare.

What practical ways to photograph pets, especially those that move frequently?

To photograph active pets, use natural light for clarity and avoid flash, which can startle them. Choose a setting where they’re comfortable. Experiment with burst mode or a pet photo app to capture multiple shots quickly. Engage them with toys or treats to capture expressive, candid moments. A contrasting background can highlight their features. Patience is vital; let them play and snap their natural behavior for authentic, lively photos.

Who are some famous pets and pet influencers on social media?

Famous pets on social media include Jiff Pom, a Pomeranian known for adorable outfits and record-breaking tricks; Grumpy Cat, celebrated for her unique frown; and Doug the Pug, famous for his humorous, relatable content. These pet influencers have captivated audiences worldwide, showcasing the unique bond between pets and humans while often collaborating with brands and raising awareness for animal causes. Their massive followings reflect the joy and connection pets bring to our lives.

What are the benefits of creating a social media account for your pet?

Creating a social media account for your pet can enhance human-animal bonds and provide a fun, creative outlet. It allows pet owners to document and share their pet’s life, creating a digital memory book. These accounts can raise awareness about animal welfare and sometimes even support charitable causes. Engaging with a community of pet lovers can also offer support, tips, and a sense of belonging. For some, it can even become a platform for pet-related businesses or sponsorships.

What advice is provided for taking photos of pets using pet photo apps?

When using pet photo apps, select features designed for animal photography, like burst mode for capturing action shots. Use filters that enhance natural colors without overdoing it. Engage your pet with toys or treats to capture their attention and natural expressions. Experiment with different angles and perspectives for unique shots. Ensure good lighting, preferably natural light, for clear, vibrant photos. Be patient and let your pet’s personality shine through for authentic and memorable images.
